Why your “summer body programme” will make you fat and unhappy in the long run
Exercise isn’t a project – Why we’re not buying into the ‘quick-fix’ hype
It’s the same every year: as soon as the temperatures rise and the days get longer in spring, the promises start flying. ‘Get beach-ready in 21 days’, ‘The last-minute diet’ or ‘Extreme workout for summer’.
At Fitagon, we say quite clearly: Don’t let it stress you out. These promises are not only unrealistic, they are, above all, one thing: unsustainable.
The problem with the “project mentality”
If you view fitness as a project with a fixed start and end date, you’re often setting yourself up for failure. A project is completed and then ticked off. But your body doesn’t work like an Excel spreadsheet. If the goal is just July, what happens in August?
The infamous yo-yo effect and physical exhaustion are usually the result of too radical changes in too short a time. We don’t believe in the quick sprint that leaves you completely burnt out. We believe in the marathon at your own pace.
Don’t be fooled by perfectly lit Instagram feeds. Many influencers suggest that, as a complete beginner, you can achieve a “dream figure” within a few months if you just buy their special programme. The truth is: that simply isn’t true.
An athletic, high-performing body is the result of years of consistency and discipline. There are no shortcuts, no magic pills, and certainly no 8-week programme that can replace years of hard work. Anyone who boasts an impressive physique today has usually put in hundreds of hours of training, the first three years of which you never saw on social media. Fitness isn’t a sprint, but a lifelong journey.
Your physique as a “positive side effect”
Here at Fitagon, we propose a radical shift in priorities: stop chasing the perfect look. If the “dream physique” is your only goal, you’ll lose motivation as soon as the results (which take time!) aren’t immediately visible.
Shift your focus to things you can influence right now:
- How do you feel? Do you have more energy in your daily life?
- What can you do? Have you become more flexible, or can you do one more push-up than last week?
- How’s your mood? Do you notice the stress melting away after your workout?
If you make exercise a fixed part of your lifestyle and find enjoyment in the challenge, something magical happens: the physical changes come all by themselves.
A toned figure is a cool side effect of a healthy, active life, but it shouldn’t be the main reason why you put on your trainers in the morning.
Longevity rather than quick fixes
For us, true fitness means longevity. It’s about still being able to climb the stairs with joy, go for a pain-free hike or lift your grandchildren in ten, twenty or thirty years’ time.
You won’t achieve that through four weeks of gruelling exercise in May, but through small, smart habits that fit into your daily life.
- Balance rather than deprivation: Enjoy the barbecue in the garden, but stick to your routine.
- Quality over quantity: 30 minutes of targeted training with the right focus is more valuable than two hours of aimless exertion.
- Enjoying exercise: Find something you enjoy, whether it’s strength training in your home gym, yoga in the park or mobility sessions after work.
The “quiet” path to success (and the right companions)
A healthy lifestyle doesn’t need a huge arsenal, but it does need consistency. It’s just like our products: we focus on quality that lasts. Instead of buying cheap junk every year, it’s worth investing in tools that will last you for years. Whether it’s a high-quality resistance band for outdoor training or a mobility tool that relieves tension before it becomes a problem, your equipment should be designed for the long term, just like your health.
